Stopped without my driving licence on me. Now what?

Quick answer

You should carry a valid licence, but a digital copy shown through DigiLocker or the mParivahan app is accepted in place of the physical card.

A 2018 advisory from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recognises documents shown through DigiLocker or mParivahan as valid for verification. So a digital licence on these apps is generally treated the same as the physical card.

If you cannot produce any valid licence, physical or digital, the officer may issue a challan under the Motor Vehicles Act, and the amount can vary by state. If you believe a challan is incorrect, reach out and we will help.
