Arrest and FIR

Can the police arrest me without a warrant?

Quick answer

In some situations the police can arrest without a warrant, but you always have rights: to be told the grounds of arrest, to inform someone, and to speak to a lawyer.

For certain offences the law allows an arrest without a prior warrant. Even then, your basic protections apply. You have the right to know why you are being arrested, the right to have a family member or friend informed, and the right to consult a lawyer.

It is usually best not to discuss the details of the matter with anyone before getting advice. If you or someone you know is facing arrest or has just been arrested, contact us quickly so we can act.
